Dr. Susan Bordenave-Bishop, President
Dr. Bordenave-Bishop is a graduate of the Washington University School of Dental Medicine. She also holds a BS in Nursing from Loyola University and a BS in Medical Technology. Additionally, she has completed Fellowship and Mastership Awards from the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). Dr. Bordenave-Bishop practices general dentistry in private practice and is Dental Director of the Peoria City/County Health Department. She is a Past President of the Peoria District Dental Society and the Illinois Academy of General Dentistry. Currently, Dr. Bordenave-Bishop is President of the Illinois Foundation of Dentistry for the Handicapped. She has served as a delegate and alternate delegate to the ADA, ISDS and AGD House of Delegates. She is also a Fellow in the American and International Colleges of Dentists, and the Academy of Dentistry International. Dr. Bordenave-Bishop is a Foundation Benefactor. Dr. Bordenave-Bishop chairs the Dental Student Research and Nominating Committees and sits on the Continuing Education, Scholarships and Executive Committees.
Dr. Thomas Sullivan, Vice President
Dr. Sullivan is a Past President of the Illinois State Dental Society from 2002-2003. Since graduating from Loyola Dental School in 1982, he has been a leader and inspiration to dental colleagues. From his early involvement in organized dentistry, he eventually served as chair of the ADA Council on Communications. Since chairing the first Membership Committee of ISDS, his passion for membership recruitment and retention became noteworthy leading to the ISDS’s institution of the Sullivan Membership Action Award for local society recruitment efforts. He went on to serve as 2nd Vice President of the American Dental Association and remains dedicated to service to dentistry at all levels. Now, as an ISDS Foundation board member, he brings his many talents to the mission of the Foundation by serving as the Fundraising Committee chair. He is totally dedicated to bringing dental care to the under-served of our population and is a proud advocate of programs to assist the disadvantaged.
Ms. Elaine Pesavento, Treasurer
Ms. Pesavento is a certified public accountant and managing director, vice-president, secretary and shareholder of Pesavento & Pesavento, Ltd., Certified Public Accountants. She is a 1977 graduate of Loyola University (Chicago), earning her CPA designation in 1978, her Master of Science in Taxation from DePaul University in 1985, and became a Certified Fraud Examiner in 2010. Ms. Pesavento is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Illinois CPA Society, the American Woman’s Society of Certified Public Accountants, the Academy of Dental CPA’s, and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners. She is also involved with the Gillette Hayden Memorial Foundation, a woman’s dental organization, established in 1930 and assists the organization with record-keeping, fund tracking, and preparation of financial statements for their annual meeting. Ms. Pesavento is chair of the ISDSF Community Awards Committee and a member of the Fundraising Committee. Pesavento & Pesavento, Ltd. is a Corporate Contributor to the ISDS Foundation. Ms. Pesavento Chairs the Community Grant Awards Committee and sits on the Finance, Fundraising and Corporate Relations Committees
Dr. Bradley W. Barnes, Director
Bradley W. Barnes, DDS, is a general dentist in Normal, Illinois. He is a 1985 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Dr. Barnes has been active in organized dentistry throughout his career and he is currently an officer of the Illinois State Dental Society. He served as Co-Chair of the ISDS Foundation’s recent Mission of Mercy. He has also served on several ISDS committees, including the Public Relations Committee, PANDA, (Prevent Abuse and Neglect through Dental Awareness), General Chair for Annual Sessions, and Trustee on the Illinois State Dental Society Board of Trustees. Dr. Barnes has been on several mission trips to places in Africa and Haiti. He is active in his church and community, through the Boy Scouts of America and Jeremiah Sportsmen. He and his wife, Becky, reside in Bloomington with their two children. Dr. Barnes is Chair of the Foundation’s Awards Committee and sits on the Finance and Executive Committees.
Dr. Keith W. Dickey, Director
Dr. Keith Dickey received his undergraduate education at Indiana State University and his dental degree from Indiana University School of Dentistry. He completed his MBA degree at Southern Illinois University. During his thirty years of full-time appointment at SIU School of Dental Medicine, he served as chair of the Department of Growth, Development and Structure, director for Continuing Education and Alumni Services and section head of Practice Management. After retirement from SIU-SDM in 2009 as emeritus associate professor, Dr. Dickey has returned part-time as director for CE and Alumni Services. Until April, 2013, Dr. Dickey maintained a private practice of general dentistry in East Alton, IL. Having served as Supreme President of Xi Psi Phi International Dental Fraternity in 1990-92, Dr. Dickey was President of Madison District Dental Society in 1992, then ISDS Central Western District Trustee from 2000-2003 and culminating as President of the Illinois State Dental Society in 2007-2008. During the 2014 ISDS Annual Session, Dr. Dickey received the ISDS Distinguished Member award. He has served as delegate and alternate to the ISDS House of Delegates, member of the DENT-IL-PAC President’s Club, and member of ISDS Committees on Governmental Affairs, Dental Education, Dental Auxiliary Education and Duties of Dental Auxiliaries in Illinois. In addition, Dr. Dickey has served as delegate and alternate to the ADA House of Delegates for fifteen years, a member of the ADA Council on Ethics, Bylaws and Judicial Affairs, and a consultant to the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation. Currently serving as President of the ISDS Foundation, Dr. Dickey is a Foundation Benefactor, and he is chair of the ISDS Foundation Executive Committee. Dr. Dickey is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists and Pierre Fauchard Academy.
Gary M. Fischer, DMD
Dr. Fischer graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 1977 from the University of Illinois and with a DMD from Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine in 1982. After graduation, he completed a one-year general practice residency at the VA Medical Center in Memphis, TN. In 1983, Dr. Fischer opened his general dentistry practice in Collinsville, IL. which he maintained until 2007. In addition, from 1984 to 2007 he was a part-time faculty member at SIU-SDM. From 2007 through the present, Dr. Fischer has served as the Director of the Advanced Education in General Dentistry program for SIU-SDM and has maintained a part-time general dentistry practice in Edwardsville, IL. He has served as president of the Madison District Dental Society, president of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Nu Xi chapter dental honor society, Chair of the SIU-SDM Faculty, and continues as Chair of the MDDS Peer Review Committee. Dr. Fischer is a Fellow in both the International College of Dentists and American College of Dentists and is a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) consultant for AEGD programs. In 2016, he served on the local planning committee for the Mission of Mercy held in Collinsville, IL. as well as participating as a volunteer dentist.
Dr. Donald G Kipper, Director
Donald G. Kipper, D.D.S. is a 1987 graduate of Loyola Dental School. He practices general dentistry in Glen Ellyn where he lives with his wife, Margaret, son Andrew and their two dogs. Dr. Kipper has been active in organized dentistry throughout his career serving as President of the Independent Dental Organization in 2003 and of the West Suburban Dental Society in 2010. He has served as an ISDS Trustee, and Co-Dinner Chair of the 2014 ISDS Annual Session. Dr. Kipper serves on many committees at the state and local level, including Entertainment Chair for the 2015 Midwinter Meeting and MWM Program Chair in 2018. He sits on the ISDS Foundation Fund Raising and Executive Committees.
Mr. Ross Kraemer, Director
Mr. Ross Kraemer has been employed by Patterson Dental Companies since 1994.. Based out of the Des Moines/ Davenport, Iowa branch, he spent his initial three years with Patterson as a Service Technician, then moved into his current position of Sales Representative in 1997. Prior to his employment with Patterson, Mr. Kraemer proudly served 11 years in the U.S. Navy, where he volunteered his time with the Red Cross and Navy Relief. He was stationed in San Diego and Point Sur California, Gulfport Mississippi, Keflavik Iceland, Virginia Beach Virginia and Argentia Newfoundland. Ross was the Supply Lead for Illinois’ first Mission of Mercy, where he used his business relationships to procure thousands of dollars worth of donated supplies from dentists within his territory and dental supply manufacturers. Mr. Kraemer serves on the Continuing Education, Corporate Relations and Relief Committees of the ISDSF Foundation Board.
Dr. David Kumamoto, Director
Dr. Kumamoto is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago college of Dentistry. He was a clinical professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry Department of Restorative Dentistry, and is now on the faculty of the Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine in Downers Grove. Dr. Kumamoto has been active in all levels of organized dentistry throughout his career including President-Elect to the Chicago Dental Association and has served as a delegate to the ISDS and ADA House of Delegates, and as president of the Academy of American Dentistry. Dr. Kumamoto is a fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry, the international College of Dentistry and the American College of Dentists. He is a member and past president of the Academy for Sports Dentistry and has served as a Team Dentist for 28 seasons. Dr. Kumamoto is an ISDS Foundation Benefactor. He holds membership in the ISDS Foundation bylaws and Policies, Dental School Liaisons, Dental Student Research and Nominating Committees. He is a member of the Bylaws and Policies, Dental Student Research and Nominating Committees and serves as Dental School Liaison for the ISDS Foundation with the Midwestern University College of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Christopher Larsen, Director
Dr. Christopher Larsen practices general dentistry in Moline and is a 1988 graduate of the University of Southern Illinois School of Dental Medicine. He was class president from 1984 through 1988, a member of the originating class of Psi Fraternity, winner of the Odontographic Society of Chicago award and presently sits on the SIU SDM Alumni Council. Dr. Larsen has been active in organized dentistry throughout his career serving as an ADA Alternate Delegate, elected Delegate 2007-2008, Action Team Leader 1996-2006, Council on Dental Practice 2007-2010 and past-chairman of the Ergonomic Committee, Dental Workforce Committee and Health & Wellness Committee. He is an ADA Foundation Benefactor. Dr. Larsen has been a member of the ISDS since 1998 and has served as a Board Trustee and Alternate delegate or Delegate to the ISDS 1993-2005, 2008-2010, 2012 and 2014. He served on the Governmental Affairs Committee 2000-2004, 2006-2007, the Member Services Committee 2005-2007 and the Allied Dental Personnel 2014-present. He was Capital Conference Chairman in 2008, with Delta Dental Advisory Committee 2013-present and ISDSF Board Member in 2014 where he is Chairman of the Media/Communications ad hoc Committee and sits on the Community Grants and Corporate Relations Committees. A member of Rock Island Dental Society (RIDDS) Dr. Larsen has served in all offices through President, Chairman of Children’s Dental Health Month 1992-1997, Give Kids a Smile 2002-present, Dental Dash race coordinator and Organizer 1992-1996. He was the originator of Scott County Dental Assisting Program at Scott Community College in 1996. Also active in his community as a Moline Little League baseball coach, board member, and team sponsor 1995-2008, Amateur Softball Association coach, Moline Basketball Associate coach and secretary, Moline Girls Basketball coarch, and the Moline “M” Men Alumni Association of former basketball players 1980-present.
Dr. Kevin Nelson, Director
Kevin T. Nelson, DDS, received his bachelor’s degree from Bradley in 1984 and his DDS degree from Northwestern University Dental School in 1988. He practices general dentistry in Peoria where he resides with wife Kristine and their two sons. A 1995 recipient of the William J. Greek Memorial Leadership award, he is a Fellow of the International College of Dentists, American College of Dentists and Academy of General Dentistry. He has been active in organized dentistry throughout his career serving in all offices through President of the Peoria District Dental Society, ISDS New Dentist Committee 1990-93, as Chairman 1994-95. P.A.N.D.A. Speaker’s Training 1995, Dent IL Pac Director 2003 – present. Dent-IL-Pac all offices through President 2011. Capitol Conference (Leadership Conference) attendee since 1990. ISDS Trustee 2011-2014. Peer Review and Mediation Committee 3 year term beginning in September 2014. Paul W. Clopper Memorial Foundation, Board of Trustees 1998-2003 and ISDS Foundation Board member beginning in 2015, serving as Chair of the Awards Committee, sitting on the Finance Committee and the Fundraising Committee. Awarded Bronze Pelican, Catholic Volunteer Boy Scout Leader Award 2004, Order of the Arrow, Boy Scout Service Fraternity, 2005 and Chairman and Advisor to Boy Scouts of America Explorer Post 805, devoted to exploring dental careers for high school students, 1989-1995.
Dr. Julie A. Paulson, Director
Dr. Julie A. Paulson shares general practice in Mt. Zion with her husband Dr. Peter Paulson, past president of ISDS. She graduated magna cum laude from Monmouth College in 1974 and from Southern Illinois School of Dental Medicine in 1979. A member of Decatur District Dental Society, Illinois State Dental Society (ISDS) and American Dental Association (ADA) since 1979. She served as chair of Children’s Dental Health Month, ISDS spokesperson, each elected office of local society, culminating in president 1991-92. Dr. Paulson has also served on ISDS Access to Care Committee, Parameters of Care Committee, and the Dental Benefits Committee. She was the general chairperson of the 1997 ISDS Annual Session, an alternate delegate and delegate to ISDS House of Delegates, and alternate delegate to the ADA House of Delegates in 1991. Dr. Paulson has served on the American Dental Associate Council on Dental Benefits 1998-2001, chair Third-Party Subcommittee 2001. Also served on DBIS subcommittee (then PNSERV), and Quality, Assessment and Improvement committee. Presenter ADA Peer Review program and locally of CDT-3 program. Dr. Paulson is a Member of the International College of Dentists, the Leadership Coordinator for District 8, and a member of the American College of Dentists.
Mr. Jerry Ragle, Director
Mr. Ragle owns and operates Ragle Dental Laboratory, Inc. of Champaign, IL, which was established in 1979 and employs a staff of 24. Mr. Ragle is active in state and national organizations, including the Illinois Dental Laboratory Association (IDLA). He has held every office including interim executive director for the association. Mr. Ragle serves on the Coordination Board of the Cal Lab Group, is a past trustee of National Association of Dental Laboratories (NADL), and is on the Communications Advisory Board for the Journal of Dental Technology (JDT). He has Mastership recognition in the American Academy of Implant Prosthodontics (AAIP) and holds certification in Ceramics and Crown and Bridge with the National Board of Certification (NBC). Mr. Ragle also served on the ISDS committee that updated the Guidelines for Dentist/Dental Laboratory Relations, which was adopted by the ADA and NADL. He is a member of the Awards, Relief, Corporate Relations and Scholarships Committees. Ragle Dental Laboratory, Inc. is a Benefactor to the ISDS Foundation.
Mr. Robert A. Rechner, Director
Robert A. Rechner retired as Executive Director of the Illinois State Dental Society at the end of 2009. He enjoyed a fulfilling career at ISDS since 1978, where he served as assistant executive director for a year before becoming executive director. As executive director, he also served as secretary/treasurer to the ISDS Foundatio n. During his tenure at ISDS, Mr. Rechner was named an honorary member of both ISDS and the American Dental Association. In addition to honorary memberships in the Illinois Academy of General Dentistry and Illinois Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Mr. Rechner was bestowed honorary fellowships in the prestigious American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. He is Chair of the Foundation’s Finance Committee and sits on the Executive, Fundraising and Nominating Committees.
Peggy Richardson, Director
Peggy Richardson, DDS, MS, is a graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry. She holds a BS degree in Dental Hygiene from Loyola University and an MS degree in Oral Science from University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Richardson practices general dentistry in Tinley Park, Illinois. Involved in organized dentistry since she started in practice, Dr. Richardson currently holds positions on the Illinois State Dental Society’s Mediation and Peer Review Committee and the Practice Advisory Committee for National Practice-Based Research Network Midwest Region. She is the past President of the Englewood Branch of the Chicago Dental Society (CDS) and the past Chairperson of the CDS New Dentist Committee. Dr. Richardson was a volunteer dentist at the Mission of Mercy events held in Bloomington, Illinois (2010) and New Orleans, Louisiana (2013). Dr. Richardson sits on the Media/Communications, Dental Student Research and Scholarship Committees.
Dr. Timmothy Schwartz, Director
Dr. Schwartz received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and his DDS degree in 1979, also from the University of Illinois. He maintains a private general dentistry practice in Pekin, IL, where he grew up and now lives with his wife Chris who is a CPA. Dr. Schwartz has been active in organized dentistry for many years as president of the Peoria District Dental Society, ISDS Board of Trustees, ADA Council on Members Insurance and Retirement, delegate to both ISDS and ADA Houses and numerous committees at the local and state level. He currently is the Vice-Speaker of the ISDS House of Delegates and will serve as State Co-Chairman of the 2014 Mission of Mercy. He serves on the Illinois State Board of Dentistry as an examiner for the NERB and WREB examinations, and as Forensic Odontologist for the Tazewell County Coroner. Dr. Schwartz is also a Fellow in both the International and American Colleges of Dentistry. He has served his community on numerous boards and committees as president of the Pekin Chamber of Commerce and currently as vice-chairman of the Pekin economic development committee. Dr. Schwartz serves on the Dental Student Research and Scholarship Committees of the ISDS Foundation Board of Directors.
Dr. Debra Schwenk, Director
Dr. Debra Schwenk is assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs at Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine (SIUSDM, her alma mater, where she has taught full-time since 1998 and part-time for ten years prior to that. In her role as assistant dean for Clinical Affairs, she manages all aspects of the clinic. Previous to her full-time teaching commitment, she owned her own general practice in Alton, Illinois. She also received a Master’s in Public Administration from SIUE in 2003. She is a member of numerous dental organizations besides the ADA and the ISDS, including the American Dental Education Association, the American College of Dentistry and the International College of Dentistry. Other honors she has received include the Women of Distinction Award for community service through the YWCA and the Vernice E. Walter Outstanding Student in Gerontology Award. Dr. Schwenk pursues her dedication for community service through membership in the Alton Wood River Zonta Club, an international women’s service club. She is a Foundation Benefactor and serves as Chair of the Relief Committee and sits on the Finance Committee.
Dr. Joseph Unger, Director
Dr. Joseph Unger is a Past President of the Illinois State Dental Society in 2008-2009. He is a 1985 graduate of Loyola University College of Dental Surgery. He maintains a private practice on the southwest side of Chicago. Dr. Unger is a member of the Englewood Branch of the CDS where he became active upon graduation and ascended to its presidency in 1995. He has been active in the Chicago Dental Society and was Program Chair for the 2001 Midwinter Meeting. Dr. Unger has served the ISDS as the first chair of the Young Dentist Committee from 1988-1992, as a member of the SELECT Committee 1990-1992, the Member Services Committee 1996-2001 and as its chair in 2001. He is currently a member of the Governmental Affairs Committee. He has been a member of the ISDS House of Delegates and ISDS Board of Trustees from 2001-2004. Dr. Unger is the 1990 recipient of the William J. Greek Memorial Leadership Award. He is a Fellow of the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. He is an examiner for the Central Regional Dental Testing Service (CRDTS). Dr. Unger is Chair of the Bylaws and Policies Committee for the Foundation.
Dr. John Williams, Director
Dr. Williams is past president of the Illinois State Dental Society in 2003-2004. He is a 1979 graduate of the University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry. Dr. Williams is a general dentist in private practice in Moline. He is a past president of the Rock Island District Dental Society and serves as a spokesperson designate for this area. He is a delegate in the ISDS House of Delegates and has served as both delegate and alternate to the American Dental Association House of Delegates. Dr. Williams is a Fellow in the International College of Dentists, the American College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. In his community he has served on the local medical center dental staff and on the Board of Directors for the John Deere Classic golf tournament. He also has served on the Board of Directors of the Public School Foundation, Blackhawk College Advisory Board, the Arrowhead Ranch (for wayward boys), and the Rock Island County Board of Health. Dr. Williams is Chair of the Scholarships Committee and sits on the Awards and Fundraising Committees.
Dr. Barbara L. Mousel, ISDS President
Dr. Barbara L. Mousel is currently the President of the Illinois State Dental Society. She has a general dental practice on the northwest side of Chicago. She began her career as a dental assistant in May of 1969. Dr. Mousel returned to school in 1975 for dental hygiene and gain in 1980 for dental school, both programs were at Loyala Dental School in Maywood, Illinois. Dr. Mousel has served as the President of the American Association of Women Dentists, President of the Central Regional Dental Testing Service, Director to the Chicago Dental Society, and a three year term as Chair of the Chicago Dental Society Foundation. She also serves on the Gillette Hayden Memorial Foundation. Dr. Mousel also served on the Illinois Board of Dentistry and served as chair for two years. Her hobbies include reading, international travel, scuba diving and gardening.
Mr. Greg A. Johnson, ISDS Executive Director
As Executive Director of the Illinois State Dental Society, Gregory A. Johnson serves as an Ex-Officio Member of the ISDS Foundation Board of Directors. Mr. Johnson was named ISDS Executive Director on January 1, 2010, and for the 20 years prior served as Director of Professional Services for ISDS. Greg has overseen the Committees on Access to Care, Dental Insurance, Dental Benefits, Members Services, and Mediation and Peer Review. He was instrument in launching the ISDSF’s first Mission of Mercy. As Executive Director he is responsible for the overall administration and operation of the Society and serves as an appointed officer to the Board of Trustees. He represents ISDS and its policies to outside interests and serves as the official spokesperson for the association. Mr. Johnson is a 1982 graduate of SIU-Edwardsville and resides in Rochester.
